The Women’s Suffrage
Movement
Women’s Suffrage was a movement not a charity. It started in the 1880s. The members were usually men and women that were well educated, wealthy, white, and Christian. They usually had the time and money to pursue their interests. The working women (usually doctors, lawyers, and educators) and homemakers (wives of professional men) were astounded by the poverty, injustice in the working world, inequality in marriage, and property laws that women suffered from. This movement happened all over the world. In Britain the movement was violent. Women fought the police, chained themselves to Buckingham Palace, and went to jail. While in Canada it was the opposite. It was peaceful they used arguments, petitions, and organized demonstrations. This movement occurred all over the world, some peaceful while others were violent.
