Working Conditions
Working conditions of workers in the 1800’s were abysmal. Some workers were women and children, and their wages were even lower than the already low wages of the male workers. Workers operated machines so they were unskilled and could easily be replaced. Morale was low as the work was hard and long. Workers had to be watched by overseers so they could not talk. Work was dangerous and many people were injured on the job. No medical attention was provided and if you were badly injured, you would lose your job. No compensation was provided either. Working in the 1800’s was a hard and depressing job.
