The Changing Role of Women in Society and the Workplace
The Power of a Woman
There were few places a woman could her exercise authority. She could alter and decorate her marital home and use her religious power, as the Roman Catholic nuns did. They could use their dowries to fund independent religious orders such as: hospitals, orphanages, homes for unwed Mothers, and schools. 2-3% of Quebec’s young women were nuns. By 1901 6,600 nuns were in Canada. In 1917 girls could get an education beyond elementary school because by then there were 568 boarding schools. Before the World War 1, women had jobs as domestic servants, nurses, and teachers. Even then their power was limited because they had to obey their bosses. Thus the power a woman had was limited to her own marital home.
