The Women and World War 1
During the World War 1, women played a major role on the home and front lines. While women didn’t actually fight, they did work as front line nurses. Putting their lives at risk and sometimes ending in deadly consequences. Women volunteered for the front line jobs. A woman’s bravery could be shown in front line hospitals and munition factories. For women who couldn’t work the front line, they worked the home front. They took over men’s jobs such as: office work, transportation, and heavy industry like shipbuilding. The biggest need was for farmers and farm hands – shoes which the women filled. While WW1 did create many new jobs, it’s uncertain times also caused the closing of countless businesses putting numerous women out of their jobs in the first months of war. By 1917 over 35,000 women worked in factories making munitions (ammunition, weapons, grenades etc.). During the war women played a huge role in doing the jobs previously done by men.

Women were also used by the military, as propaganda. It was usually to encourage recruits to join the front lines. It depicted women and childrens’ safety as an assentive to join the war and fight for them. The publications eventually turned to the women. It encouraged them to save food, support menfolk, and participate in activities like making munitions and joining the new women’s armed forces’ auxiliaries. Female family members and children were told to be cheerful when sending men to war. During the war, women learned an abundance of new skills. For example, since there was a shortage of servants, wealthy woman were forced to learn new experiences such as cooking and cleaning. Ladies also did military support jobs such as: administrative work, cooking, and answering the telephone. WW1 gave women a sense of freedom and what it would taste like if they fought for it.
