The Work Place and Women
Women working in factories were not treated too kindly. Their male colleagues felt that women couldn’t do as good of a job as the men. They were required to work long hours. A ten hour day was common in Canada. These women worked the same hours in the same conditions as men, yet they got paid less than their opposite gender. Some women worked in shops or at home. They would use their own sewing machines to turn out skirts, blouses, suits, and topcoats for big clothing manufacturers. The manufacturers provided the thread. They would sew up the garments and deliver the finished garment to the factory. For each garment, the women would get $0.26 for a jacket or $0.17 for a vest. This system allowed women to work from home. Although, this job paid so poorly that they had to work from sunrise to late at night. Many of the women hired were immigrants. These house shops earned the name “sweatshops”. Despite their hard work they got paid less and treated unkindly.
